Description

A terrace of seven houses, now offices and three houses (one divided into flats), built in the early 1850s. The houses are constructed of Flemish bond brickwork with light-coloured headers, resting on a chamfered plinth. The dressings are of calciferous sandstone, now painted, and Nos. 36-42 have an eaves cornice. The roof is of graduated slate, with No. 46 featuring a skylight and a gabled dormer. Original shared brick chimney stacks remain. The houses are two storeys high, with two bays each, except for No. 46, which has three bays and a two-bay return fronting Compton Street. No. 1 Compton Street is also three bays. Nos. 44, 46, and No. 1 Compton Street are of a slightly different construction but attempt to match the rest of the terrace. The front doors are panelled and 20th century, set within Tuscan doorcases with overlights. The sash windows are set within brick reveals, with stone sills and flat brick arches, except for No. 42, which originally formed the end of Burlington Terrace and features stone architraves. No. 1 Compton Street is distinguished by a broad pilastered door surround with a plain entablature and cornice. The interiors have not been inspected. Speared iron railings enclose the basement voids. Burlington Terrace was not present on the 1851 census, but appeared on Asquith’s Survey of Carlisle in 1853. Some properties in the terrace were demolished in the late 1960s to make way for an inner ring road.
