Description

This is a group of five houses forming a terrace, built in the 1830s on the north side of Etterby Street in Stanwix, Carlisle. The houses are constructed of Flemish bond brickwork, with lighter-coloured headers, and sit on a chamfered plinth. Nos. 62 and 68 have a roughcast finish. They have Welsh slate roofs and original brick chimney stacks, one of which is rendered. The houses are two storeys high and two bays wide each, with a stepped design following the slope of the hill. The houses are of both single- and double-depth layout. The front doors are panelled, with fanlights above; Nos. 66 and 68 retain their original radial patterned fanlights within pilastered surrounds with false imposts and decorative keys. Nos. 64 and 70 feature paired doorways, with the right-hand door providing access to a through-passage. No. 66 has a door on the left and its through-passage on the right. The sash windows are mostly original, and No. 70 retains its glazing bars. All the windows except those in No. 62 have architraves made of painted stone. The interiors have not been inspected. The properties are depicted on the 1840 tithe map.
