Description
Middle Farm is a farmhouse that has been converted into a private house, along with an adjoining former barn. It dates from the early 18th century and has had some alterations in the 19th century. The building is constructed from large blocks of coursed red sandstone with flush quoins set on a chamfered plinth. It features a Welsh slate roof and brick chimney stacks. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has three bays, with a single-bay former barn extension to the left under a common roof.
There is a 20th-century door framed by a painted quoined surround. Above the entrance, the original window has had its flat stone mullion removed and now features a painted stone architrave. To the right of the entrance is an enlarged 20th-century casement window, and to the left, there is a small enlarged fire window. The other windows are single-pane sash windows set in enlarged 19th-century painted stone surrounds. A sundial on the upper floor to the right is inscribed with "D.30 1756," which has been recut and also dated 1961. The date above the entrance has weathered away without being recorded.
The barn extension has a blocked entrance and slit vents above. Inside, there is a fire beam and a plastered heck position. A spice cupboard recess and a probable salt cupboard without doors flank a 20th-century fireplace. The fire hood in the bedroom above projects into the room and has internal wooden hooks for hanging bacon. A cradle cupboard in the bedroom above has been converted into a wardrobe. The outbuilding to the right has an asbestos roof, and other outbuildings are not of interest.
