Description
Cumdivock War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1919, located in the churchyard of St John’s Church in Cumdivock, Cumbria. It is prominently positioned at the west end of the churchyard, near the churchyard wall and the corner of the road, making it visible to those passing by.
The memorial features a simple Latin cross made of copper tubing, which sits atop an octagonal oak shaft. The shaft has a carved capital that displays four shield designs. This is all set on an octagonal sandstone plinth with a sloping cap, which includes a slate panel for the inscription. The base is made of three tiers of octagonal stone.
The inscription is carved in incised lettering and reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN COMMEMORATION OF THE MEN OF THIS TOWNSHIP WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 (NAMES) THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE 1939 – 1945 (NAMES)."
