Description
Cardew Lodge is a house built in the 1870s for Major-General W.H. Lowther, with additions made in 1889 by architect C.J. Ferguson, whose initials are inscribed above the entrance. The building is constructed of coursed red and calciferous sandstone, featuring flush quoins, and has roofs made of greenslate and sandstone slate, along with tall ashlar chimney stacks.
The house is two storeys high and has three bays, with a single-storey extension to the left and a two-storey, four-bay extension to the right, creating an L-shape. The entrance is recessed within a chamfered surround, and there is a carved wooden panel above it that is dated and inscribed. To the left, there is a three-light stone-mullioned window with round arches and leaded panes. The right side features two- and three-light stone-mullioned windows with flat arches, and above these are steel casements in chamfered stone surrounds. The left extension has a large 20th-century casement window.
On the garden elevation, there is a two-storey gabled bay with stone-mullioned windows, and a projecting single-storey gabled bay to the right that includes a canted bay window. The left end wall has a circular, battlemented two-storey turret with a pointed entrance and lancet windows, all of which have hood moulds. Cardew Lodge was the home of architect C.J. Ferguson. The outbuildings associated with the property are listed separately.
