Description
Pompeian Cottage is a house built around 1830 by Sarah Losh, designed as a replica of a house excavated at Pompeii. The structure features calcareous sandstone rubble walls and a slate roof, with the bottom courses made of stone-slates. It is two storeys high and consists of a single bay with a single bay extension to the right, which shares the same roof, as well as an extension to the rear. The cottage has 2-light casement windows, a sloping half gable roof, and brick chimney stacks. The gabled two-storey extension at the rear of the single bay now serves as the entrance. Sarah Losh, who traveled extensively in Italy, incorporated many architectural ideas from her travels into her designs, and this cottage was built for the village schoolmaster.
