Description
This is a terrace of five houses located on Scotland Road in Carlisle. Built in the late 1860s or early 1870s, the houses are constructed of English bond brickwork, with one house painted. They have a chamfered plinth and red sandstone dressings, with stone-bracketed metal gutters. The roofs are slate, with shared red brick chimney stacks featuring cream brick detailing.
Each house is two storeys and two bays wide, designed with a double-depth plan. The two houses on the left have a higher roofline to accommodate the sloping ground. Each has a right panelled door and overlight within a prostyle Ionic porch, accessed by steps. The windows are sash windows, although some have been replaced with modern frames, and one house features an inserted canted bay window. The interiors have not been inspected.
The houses do not appear on the 1865 Ordnance Survey map, but given that a nearby property on Thornton Road was under construction in 1871, the terrace was likely built around that time.
