Description

Birds House is a house dated 1666, with alterations from the 18th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone, banded with ironstone, and features ironstone dressings, along with red brick in Flemish bond with flared headers. The roof is covered in plain tiles, and there are stone end and ridge stacks. The building has a two-unit plan, is two storeys high with an attic, and has a two-window range.

The central entrance features a 20th-century door set in a pegged wood surround, with a stop-chamfered wood lintel to the right. On the ground and first floors, there are three-light hollow-chamfered leaded stone mullion windows, both with hood moulds. Above, there is a gabled dormer window with a similar three-light window, where the central light is stepped up and has a stepped hood mould. To the far right, there is a small rectangular window with a chamfered stone surround, and a similar blocked window is located above the door.

To the left of the centre, there is a bay faced with brick on a stone plinth, which has a two-light leaded casement window on the ground floor with HL hinges, and a three-light leaded casement window on the first floor, both with wood lintels. The building features quoins and stone-coped gables with kneelers. The stone flues have chamfered bases and cornices, with the end stack to the right bearing an inscription of B/HM below the cornice and another above the base inscribed 1666.

Inside, the house has stop-chamfered spine beams and an open fireplace with a bar-stop-chamfered bressumer. The roof is supported by a collar truss.
