Description
Bengal Manor is a manor house dated 1695, with alterations made in the 19th century and additional changes in the 20th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared limestone with ironstone dressings and features a plain-tile roof with stone end stacks. It has a two-unit central staircase plan and stands two storeys high with an attic, displaying a three-window range.
The central entrance features a 17th-century style doorcase from 1934, which includes six-panel, part-glazed, double-leaf doors. The ground and first floors have leaded cross windows with moulded stone sills and surrounds. Architectural details include a chamfered plinth, a moulded storey-band, chamfered quoins, and stone-coped gables with kneelers. The eaves are nogged brick, and there are 20th-century roof dormers. The left gable end has two narrow one-light windows on the ground floor, also with moulded stone sills and surrounds, and pairs of horizontal oval windows at the first and attic floor levels, featuring moulded stone surrounds and a datestone inscribed with TH/AD/1695.
To the right, there is a large two-storey, two-window extension from the 20th century. An attached wall at the left angle encloses a forecourt and has ridged stone coping and chamfered quoins at the outer angle. This wall leads to the left gatepier, which frames the gates aligned with the front door. The gatepier features a chamfered base, chamfered rustication, double moulded caps, and a ball finial.
Inside, the manor includes ogee-stop-chamfered spine beams, an open well staircase with turned balusters, and a bolection-moulded wood corner fireplace surround in the upper room.
