Description

Orchard Cottage is a house dating from the late 17th century, with possible earlier origins, and has undergone some alterations and additions in the 20th century. It is built from coursed limestone rubble with some ironstone, featuring plain-tile roofs and brick ridge and end stacks set on stone bases. The house has an L-plan layout and is two storeys high with an attic.

The wing facing Bengal Lane has a four-panel door with a wooden lintel and a 20th-century timber porch, along with a leaded side-light to the right. To the left of the door, there is a two-light casement window with a chamfered wooden lintel, and above it, a three-light casement window with a boxed wooden lintel on the first floor. Part of the wall of this wing is banded with ironstone, which may indicate older construction. There is a lower two-storey extension to the right with one window.

The projecting wing to the left features three-light leaded casements on the ground floor and a similar window on the first floor gable end, along with a two-light casement above and at the rear left side. All these windows have wooden lintels. Additionally, there is a small square blocked window with a chamfered ironstone surround on the first floor left side. This wing is distinguished by quoins and stone-coped gables with kneelers.

Inside, the cottage includes a stop-chamfered spine beam and an open fireplace with a replacement bressumer, along with a moulded Tudor-arched stone fireplace.
