Description

The Old Toll House is a pair of houses that also served as a former Canal Toll Office, built in the early to mid 19th century. Constructed from brick, it features a hipped roof covered in corrugated tiles and brick chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and a cellar, with three bays. The doorways in the left and right bays have moulded wood surrounds, leading to six-panel doors topped with moulded timber hoods supported by brackets. The central bay contains a six-pane sash window with a painted brick lintel, and there are similar sash windows on the first floor. On the left side, there is a cellar entrance with a concrete lintel, and above it, a sash window set in a recessed brick arch. The right side of the building features a two-storey canted bay with sash windows facing the canal. At the rear, there is an extension, likely the former toll collection office, which is also brick and has two bays. This extension includes a doorway with a flat arched brick frame and a plank door in the left bay, and a window with a similar frame and old iron glazing bars to the right. The interior has not been inspected. The Grand Junction Canal, which the toll house served, was authorized by an Act of Parliament in 1793, with the Braunston section completed by 1796. In 1929, it was taken over by the Grand Union Canal Company, which changed its name.
