Description
The bridge at Braunston Wharf, built around 1830, is made of cast iron and features a moulded elliptical arch along with a cast iron trellis parapet. The arch is inscribed on both sides with "Horseley Ironworks." It has brick flanking walls topped with blue brick coping. The Grand Junction Canal was authorized by an Act of Parliament in 1793, and the section at Braunston was completed by 1796. This bridge formerly connected to the Oxford Canal near Braunston Wharf. Between 1829 and 1834, the course of the Oxford Canal was altered to connect with the Grand Junction Canal approximately 800 meters to the west at Junction Wharf, where there are two other iron bridges made by Horseley Ironworks that share a similar design to this bridge.
