Description
The Old Castle is a house dating from the early 18th century, situated on the south side of Braunston Main Road. The building is constructed of coursed ironstone rubble with chamfered quoins, and has a slate roof with stone stacks at the sides. It follows a lobby-entry plan and extends over two storeys, with an attic and cellar, arranged in five bays. The central doorway has a moulded stone frame with a keyblock and a 20th-century door with overlight. A window to the left has a timber lintel and a two-light transomed wooden casement; all other windows have moulded stone frames and two-light transomed wooden casements. A string course runs along the first-floor level. There is a flat-roofed dormer window, and coped gable ends with kneelers. Inside, the house features stop-chamfered spine beams. An original winder stair is located opposite the entrance, with an old plank door leading to the cellar. The building was formerly a public house, known as “Berryfields Inn” and later "The Castle Inn."
