Description
No. 167 on Watling Street West is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of painted brick and has a slate roof with brick stacks at each end. It features a two-unit plan and stands three stories tall with a three-window range.
The central entrance consists of a part-glazed door with an overlight and fanlight, framed by a pilastered timber surround that includes panelled reveals and an opened pediment resting on sections of entablature supported by brackets. There are two-storey canted bay windows on both the left and right sides. The centre of the first and second floors has blank windows, which are topped with gauged brick lintels and keyblocks. On the second floor, there is a three-light casement window on the left and a two-light casement window on the right, both with brick lintels. A moulded stone cornice, which is painted, runs along the top.
Inside, there is a dog-leg staircase that leads from the ground floor to the attic, featuring slender turned balusters. The ground floor room includes a carved wood chimneypiece in the style of the late 18th century.
