Description

Middleton House is a house dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, which was refronted in 1801, as indicated by the datestone. The building features a brick facade, with coursed limestone rubble at the rear and sides, and a slate roof with brick stacks. It has two storeys and five bays. The doorway, located in the second bay from the right, has a wooden frame with fluted Doric pilasters, a straight entablature, and panelled reveals. The entrance includes a six-panel door with an overlight. All windows have straight rendered lintels and feature two-light casements with wooden mullions and transoms. The datestone is located in the left bay on the first floor, reading "1638 / GIF / 1801 / I.W." To the left, there is a lower extension that is part stone and part brick, comprising one bay and two storeys, with a doorway that has a rendered lintel and a six-panel door with an overlight; this doorway is said to have been moved around 1900 from the left side facing the street. There is a 20th-century extension to the right.

Inside, the house was remodelled in the early 19th century, featuring an open well staircase from this period, with tread ends carved with scrolls and a curved handrail. The ground floor room includes 18th and 19th-century wooden panelling and a frieze carved with grape vines. The doorcases are adorned with fluted pilasters and panelled doors.
