Description

Beech Tree House is a house located in Lower Middleton, Middleton Cheney, dating from the 17th century, with extensions and alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. The building features coursed limestone and ironstone rubble, topped with an artificial stone slate roof and stone stacks. It has a through passage plan, is two storeys high, and consists of three bays.

The doorway in the second bay from the right has a wooden lintel and a plank door, while the porch is constructed from re-used 19th-century wood carvings, featuring twisted columns and a thatched roof. To the right of the doorway is a window with a concrete lintel and a three-light wooden casement. A semi-circular bread oven projects from the left side of the house. The windows in the left bay and the second bay from the left have wooden lintels and two-light wooden casements. The window in the third bay from the left has three lights with a transom, an iron casement, and a wooden lintel. On the first floor, there are two-light casement windows with wooden lintels.

The house has a stack to the right of the centre, with 18th and 20th-century extensions at the rear. Inside, there are stop-chamfered spine beams and joists, an open fireplace, a bread oven, and an original winder staircase. Beech Tree House is noted as a documented example selected by R. Wood-Jones to illustrate the development of a small 17th-century house.
