Description
Ballad is a cottage dating from the 18th century, which incorporates earlier work and was remodeled in the early 19th century. It is constructed of uncoursed limestone and ironstone rubble, topped with a thatched roof and features brick and stone stacks. The building has an L-plan layout, is two storeys high with an attic, and consists of three bays.
On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century window in the center, which has replaced the original entrance; this window features a wood lintel and a two-light casement. The windows on either side of this central window have original lintels, but their openings have been enlarged to accommodate 20th-century casements. The central window on the first floor, dating to around 1820, has an arched head with Gothick Y-tracery and leaded panes. The flanking windows on the first floor also have wood lintels and 20th-century casements. On the left side of the first floor, there is a blocked pointed chamfered arch.
At the rear, there is a wing from the 18th to 19th century, which is two storeys tall and features a 20th-century doorway along with casement windows that have wood lintels. Inside, the cottage has stop-chamfered main beams and a stone doorway with a shouldered arch.
