Description

Middleton Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 17th century, with a datestone indicating the year 1683. It was remodelled in the 19th century. The building is constructed of squared coursed limestone and ironstone, topped with a tiled roof and featuring brick and stone stacks. It has an L-shaped plan.

The street-facing side has a gabled bay on the right, with two storeys and an attic, while the left bay has two storeys. The central doorway features a rectangular overlight and a four-panel door that is partially glazed, topped by a 19th-century gabled timber hood. On either side of the door are 19th-century windows with segmental heads made of black brick and three-light wood casements. There is a similar window in the right bay on the first floor, while the left bay has a window with a wood lintel and a three-light wood casement. The attic window, dating from the 17th century, has two lights with a stone mullion and a stone hood.

The rear wing, also from the late 17th century, uses similar materials and has two storeys and an attic with three bays and a central stack. The doorway to the right of the centre features a wood lintel, a six-panel door, and a 20th-century timber porch. To the left of this doorway is a 17th-century one-light window with a stone hood, and a similar three-light window with stone mullions in the left bay. The right bay contains a 20th-century window with a concrete lintel. On the first floor, the left bay has a two-light window with a stone mullion, while the right bay features a single-light window with a stone hood and a window with a wood lintel and a 20th-century three-light metal casement. The date 1683 is roughly inscribed on the quoin stone of the left bay on the ground floor. The left side of the house has two-light windows with stone mullions and square hoods on all floors. The interior has not been inspected.
