Description

Two houses, Rooty Hill, date from the mid-17th century. They are located on Moulton Chater Street. The front is now rendered, and the roofs are thatched. Each house has a two-unit plan. Number 8 features a lobby entrance and is single-storey with an attic. The houses together have a five-window range of casement windows with leaded lights. A four-light stone mullion window is situated on the ground floor to the extreme right of Number 8. Number 8 has a 20th-century door and hood to the right. Ashlar gable parapets are present, along with two eyebrow dormers to the right. Brick stacks stand at the ridge and end of the building. The entrance to Number 10 is located at the rear. Inside Number 8, a room to the left of the entrance features an open fireplace with a bressumer, and stopped chamfered ceiling beams with run-out stops. There are 18th-century plank and panelled doors and plank window shutters. Some original stud screens are visible at the first floor level, and a dogleg staircase is present. The roof structure includes a collar roof truss.
