Description

The cottages at 2, 4, 6, and 8 Blakesley Hill, formerly a single dwelling and likely a farmhouse, probably originated in an earlier period but were dated 1694. They were subdivided, extended, and altered in the 19th century and renovated in the 20th century. The cottages are constructed of coursed ironstone and limestone rubble, with a 20th-century tile roof replacing the original thatch. Number 8 has a decorative 19th-century tile roof. Brick ridge stacks are present. The original plan likely comprised three units. The cottages are two storeys and have an attic, with a five-window range to the front. C20 doors are set beneath timber lintels. The window openings are irregularly spaced, containing two- and three-light casement windows, all with timber lintels. A datestone above the right-hand window of the front door of Number 6 is inscribed with "H/WM/1694", flanked by spiral fluted colonnettes supporting a broken pediment with a cherub's head. Inside Number 4, there is an open fireplace with a bressumer that is cambered, chamfered, and dated 1654, alongside chamfered spine beams.
