Description
Grove Cottage is a house dating from the early to mid 17th century, with possible older origins and some alterations made in the 20th century. It is built from coursed limestone rubble and features a thatched roof with brick ridge and end stacks. The cottage is two stories high and has a four-window range, following a three-unit through-passage plan with an additional one-unit section.
There is a blocked door to the left of the center with a wooden lintel, and a 20th-century door with a wooden lintel further to the left. The ground floor has two-light casement windows to the left of the center and three-light casements to the right of the center, all with wooden lintels. The first floor features two-light casements in eyebrow dormers. A single-storey extension is located at the left end of the building.
Inside, the cottage has bar-stop-chamfered spine beams with heart-shaped stops at the ends, some original stop-chamfered joists, and two open fireplaces, one with stop-chamfered stone jambs and another with a stop-chamfered bressumer. The roof structure includes two collars to the principal rafters. The right end bay has a cruder spine beam and large joists that are visible externally, suggesting it may have originally served as an outbuilding.
