Description

Tudor Cottage is a cottage dated 1653, featuring 19th and 20th-century extensions. It is constructed from coursed squared limestone with a thatched roof and has brick end stacks, the left one being original with a stone base. The cottage is two stories high and has a two-window range. It follows a two-unit plan with a narrow central unit that includes an entrance lobby and staircase at the front, and a pantry at the rear. The central door, which is from the 20th century, has a wooden lintel. The cottage has two-light casement windows on both the ground and first floors; the ground-floor windows replace original stone mullion windows but retain their hood moulds, while the first-floor windows are set in eyebrow dormers. There is a two-storey, one-bay extension on the left side and a single-storey 20th-century extension at the rear. The datestone features a fleur-de-lis flanked by roses beneath the date. The quoins are made of ironstone.

Inside, the plan remains largely unaltered, with timber stud partitions in the central entrance bay. The rooms on either side have ogee-stop-chamfered spine beams. There is an open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer. A stone doorway on the left end wall, now internal, features a sunk chamfer with a four-centred head, cut spandrels, and a rectangular moulded stone surround; this doorway is from the 16th century and is almost certainly reused. Upstairs, there is a stone fireplace with a moulded Tudor-arched head and cut spandrels, likely from the same period and source as the doorway. The cottage has a winder stair and a roof supported by a pair of trusses over the central bay, featuring clasped principals and collars, a ridge piece, and two tiers of purlins.
