Description
Appletree Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, with later additions. It is built from limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and brick dressings, and has a thatched roof with brick ridge-stacks. The cottage has a three-unit lobby-entrance plan that was extended in the 20th century. It stands one storey plus attics. The street-facing side has three 18th-century three-light casement windows with brick quoins, all beneath chamfered timber lintels, and there are two three-light dormers above. A brick extension is located to the left, while the entrance is at the rear.
Inside, there is a large stack with an open inglenook fireplace and a bread-oven. The left bay features broad joists, while the centre has chamfered and stopped joists, with a timber-framed partition under a queen-post truss. The roof includes a single row of clasped purlins and some exposed curved wind-braces, along with an internal gable truss to the right. The structure may have originally been timber-framed.
