Description

A pair of cottages dating from the 17th century, located on Blacksmiths Hill in Aynho. The cottages are constructed of coursed limestone and ironstone rubble, with a thatched roof and brick stacks. They are two storeys high and five bays wide. Number 11 has doorways in the right bay and the third bay from the right, both with wooden lintels and 20th-century partly glazed doors. The doorway in the third bay from the right has a thatched hood. A window with a 20th-century wooden lintel and a three-light casement sits between the doorways, with a similar window in the left bay. A first-floor window in the left bay features an 18th or 19th-century four-light iron casement. Two 20th-century windows are located on the right-hand side. A 17th-century wooden mullioned window is visible at the rear on the first floor. An entrance to Number 9 is located at the rear. The first-floor windows on the front have 18th or 19th-century wooden lintels and casements, while the ground-floor windows have 20th-century metal casements. A semi-circular stair turret is positioned at the rear. The interior of Number 11 retains stop-chamfered spine beams and joists, as well as an open fireplace with an original bressumer. The interior of Number 9 was not inspected, but a newel staircase is reported to have been removed.
