Description

The cottages at 57 and 59 Church Street date to the late 17th and early 18th centuries. They are built of coursed squared ironstone, with thatched roofs, a brick end stack, and a stone ridge stack to number 59, which includes brick patching. Number 59 has a two-unit through-passage plan. The cottages are two storeys high with a five-window range. The ground floor windows are 3-light casements with timber lintels; the window on the left has a stop-chamfered lintel. The first floor features eyebrow dormers with two 3-light casement windows. The gable end on the right has a 3-light chamfered mullion window on the ground floor, with the left light blocked, and two 2-light windows with timber lintels above. An outshut and lean-to extension are visible to the rear.

Number 57 has a 6-panel door with pointed-arch top panels and a timber lintel, extending over a 3-light casement window to the right. Two 3-light casement windows with timber lintels are to the left. A blocked doorway is located between the far-left window and the window to the left of the door. The first floor has a 3-light casement window flanked by two similar 2-light windows, all with timber lintels. The main entrance to number 57 is at the left end. A 20th-century extension is present at the rear.

Inside, both cottages feature stop-chamfered spine beams. Number 59 includes a stop-chamfered open fireplace, complete with a 19th-century cast-iron range and a bread oven. Number 57 was originally three cottages.
