Description

A pair of cottages dating from the mid to late 17th century, situated on the east side of Hindon High Street. The cottages are constructed of dressed limestone with a tiled roof, incorporating bands of fish-scale tiling, brick stacks, and coped verges. They are two storeys high, with a symmetrical 4-window facade. Number 1 has a planked door, while Number 2 features a 20th-century planked door. The ground floor of Number 1 has a 3-light casement to the left, and two 2-light casements to the right. The first floor on Number 1’s left side has a 3-light hollow-chamfered mullioned casement, a blocked 2-light mullioned casement, and a 2-light and 3-light hollow-chamfered mullioned casement to the right; all first-floor casements are leaded. A 2-light casement is present in the attic on the left return. The rear of the property features a gabled wing to Number 1 with casements, and a lean-to extension to Number 2, also with casements. The interior of Number 1 includes an open fireplace with a chamfered lintel on stone jambs, chamfered beams, and a staircase with stick balusters. The interior of Number 2 was not inspected. Historically, the cottages were used as The White Horse Inn during the 18th century.
