Description
Brigstock House is a house with origins said to date back to the mid-16th century, with most of its structure from the mid and late 18th century and the 19th century. It is built of squared coursed limestone with an ashlar facade, topped with Collyweston slate and concrete tile roofs. The house originally had a two-unit plan and stands two storeys high with an attic. It features a three-window range of sash windows with glazing bars, with the flanking windows being tripartite, all set under gauged stone heads. There is a raised string course between the floors, and the roof has a pair of flat-topped dormers along with ashlar gable parapets and kneelers. The ends of the building have remains of ashlar stacks. Attached to the right is a one-window range that is similar in style, likely built at a different time, also featuring sash windows with glazing bars. There is evidence of a blocked door on the left side, and the entrance to the house is now at the rear. A 19th-century range, which was remodelled in the 20th century, is attached at right angles to the rear. Inside, the central room has ceiling beams and an open fireplace with a painted inscription, said to be the Ten Commandments, on the bressumer. The house was used for a time as a Quaker Meeting House.
