Description

This is a mid-17th century house and shop, remodelled in the 19th century. It is constructed from squared coursed limestone with a slate roof. Originally planned as two units, it now forms an L-shape. The building is two storeys high with a range of casement windows at the first floor. These windows have glazing bars and are set under wooden lintels. The ground floor has two 19th-century casement windows, also under wooden lintels, alongside a central 6-panel door with glazed toplights, set within a 19th-century lattice porch. A bay to the right projects forward with a lean-to roof and incorporates a 19th-century shop front featuring a window with glazing bars. A brick stack is located at the end of the building. A two-window range attached at right angles to the rear, likely of 17th-century origin but remodelled in the 19th century, is also present. Inside, a room at the rear contains an 18th-century corner cupboard, a salt cupboard, and a Bible cupboard. A 17th-century staircase features a splat balustrade. The roof structure is of cruck construction, as documented in Alcock’s Catalogue of Cruck Construction.
