Description
This is a house, likely originating in the 16th century, with significant alterations recorded in the 18th century. A datestone indicates 1588 and 1730. The house is constructed of squared coursed limestone with ashlar gables and a Collyweston slate roof. Originally a two-unit plan, it is two storeys high with an attic and has three bays. The first floor has a two-window range of tall 19th-century casements under wooden lintels. The ground floor has a three-window range, with two sash windows featuring glazing bars on the left, a casement on the right, all under wooden lintels. A plank door is centrally positioned under a wooden lintel and door opening, now a window, is located on the far right. There are three gabled dormers with 20th-century windows. Ashlar gable parapets, kneelers, and ashlar stacks are present at the ends. The right gable, which abuts the road, has 20th-century casements in original openings under stone lintels with a keyblock. A later wooden lintel sits below the original stone lintel of the ground floor window. A datestone depicting an animal shows two dates. A lateral ashlar stack is present, along with a 19th-century lean-to building to the rear. The interior, which was not fully inspected, is noted to contain spine beams with run-out stops and remains of an open fireplace. The house was formerly a post office, as indicated by historical Ordnance Survey maps.
