Description
Nos 4 and 6 Market Place are two houses that together form one architectural unit, dating from the early 18th century. They are two storeys high, constructed in ashlar, and feature steep stone slate roofs with raised verges at the centre and both ends. A heavy stone chimney is located at the centre and the west end of the buildings. There are six pedimented dormers in total, including two triangular and one segmental in the centre of each house. Both houses have five windows on the first floor, plus a blind window in the centre. A continuous band connects the window cills. The windows are early sash types with heavy glazing bars, narrow moulded cases, plain reveals, and stone lintels with triple keystones. Additionally, two early windows are intact at the west end of the ground floor of No 4, above which are the remnants of a platband. No 4 also features a good 19th-century shop front, while the entire ground floor of No 6 is occupied by a later shop. There is a central doorway leading to a passage between the two houses, which has a heavy rusticated doorcase with a cornice, a semi-circular headed doorway, a panelled door, and a panelled inset above. All the listed buildings in Market Place form a group.
