Description
Kings Cliffe Spa, located at SP 9962 9595, is a spa bath that likely dates back to the early 18th century. Constructed from limestone ashlar, it features a rectangular tank with a flight of stone steps in the west wall. The tank's paved floor includes drainage channels. There is a smaller chamber attached to the south-west corner of the tank, which also has access steps and was likely used as a feeder channel. The walls of the tank are marked with graffiti dating from 1747 to the end of the 19th century. The potential of a chalybeate spring from the ferruginous limestone was first utilized by Dr. Brown around 1670, and Morton noted a "fit cistern of stone" in 1712.
