Description

A spa bath house, dating from 1834 and built for The Spa Bath Company, now used as a private dwelling and shop, with alterations made since. The building is constructed of ashlar magnesian limestone on a rock-faced plinth, with a graduated slate roof. It has a U-shaped plan and a principal front with 2, 3, and 3 windows, overlooking the River Wharfe. The rear entrance is located between the wings, facing Spa Lane.

The riverside front has a battered plinth and a canted central projection with a sill band and 20th-century casement windows beneath flat arches. To the right are three 20th-century casements, and to the left are two larger casements in altered openings. The roof is hipped, with two ridge stacks and a stack to the ridge of the right-hand rear wing. The rear elevation features a blocked window on the left wing, a doorway on the right wing, and an infill section between the two wings which is not of particular interest. The right return has two blind windows with projecting sills and flat arches, along with a 20th-century casement on the right.

The baths were built to capitalise on the widespread demand for the medicinal properties of the Spa water spring, which was first discovered nearby in 1744. The building is included on the list partly due to its historical importance.
