Description

Cemetery Lodge, built around 1857-58 by E.F. Law, is a lodge house constructed from squared coursed and rusticated limestone with ashlar dressing. It has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall. The entrance front features a two-window range, with a square turret on the left and a gable on the right. To the left, there is a 19th-century plank door with a four-centred moulded stone head. On the right, a canted bay window with stone mullions and transoms is complemented by a similar projecting window above, both featuring leaded diamond panes. The turret includes a pair of lancet windows with cusping on two sides and is topped with a square pyramid roof. The gable has bargeboards, and there are stone stacks at the eaves and ends. The other elevations are similar. The interior has not been inspected.

The lodge is accompanied by gatepiers with gabled copings, which are linked by wrought-iron gates and a wall with intermediate piers and wrought-iron railings to the south. This structure is part of a planned cemetery layout that includes a Non-conformist mortuary chapel and a Church of England mortuary chapel at the London Road cemetery, contributing to its group value.
