Description
The Non-conformist mortuary chapel at London Road cemetery was built around 1857-58 by E.F. Law. It is constructed from squared coursed and rusticated limestone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. This single-storey chapel has a gable entrance front that includes a pair of central plank doors with decorative hinges set beneath a pointed chamfered arch. Above the doors, there is a three-light window in the Decorated style, complete with tracery.
To the right of the entrance, a small two-stage square tower features lancet windows on the lower stage and two-light bell chamber openings on the upper stage. The chapel is adorned with an ashlar cornice that has a corbel table and corner gargoyles. The broach spire is covered in fish-scale slate and topped with a metal cross finial. The side elevations consist of a three-window range, while the rear elevation has a one-window range, all similar to the entrance front, with two-stage buttresses at the corners and between the window ranges. There is a gabled porch attached to the left side elevation. The interior has not been inspected. This chapel is part of a planned cemetery layout that includes a Church of England mortuary chapel and the cemetery itself.
