Description
The Church of England mortuary chapel, located in the London Road cemetery, was built around 1857-58 by E.F. Law. It is constructed from squared coursed and rusticated limestone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. This single-storey chapel has a gabled entrance front that includes a pair of central plank doors with decorative hinges, set beneath a pointed chamfered arch. Above the doors is a three-light decorated style window with tracery.
To the left of the entrance is a small two-stage square tower, which has lancet windows on the lower stage and two-light bell chamber openings on the upper stage. The chapel is adorned with an ashlar cornice featuring a corbel table and corner gargoyles. It has a broach spire covered in fish scale slate and topped with a metal cross finial. The side elevations consist of three windows, while the rear has a single-window range, all similar to the entrance front. There are two-stage buttresses at the corners and between the window ranges, and a gabled porch is attached to the right side elevation. The interior has not been inspected. This chapel is part of a planned cemetery layout that also includes a Non-conformist mortuary chapel and a cemetery lodge.
