Description

Ye Golden Lion Public House is a farmhouse that has been converted into a public house, believed to date from around 1540 and restored in the mid-19th century. It features squared coursed and banded limestone and ironstone, along with a close studded timber frame and a plain-tile roof from the 20th century. The building has a three-unit plan and stands two storeys high with a four-window range.

The central door, which dates from the 20th century, is framed with a moulded stone surround and has a four-centred head. To the left of the entrance, there is a projecting cross wing with an oversailing timber-framed upper storey. The ground floor has a six-light casement window, while the first floor features a four-light oriel window. The first floor window on the far left is a half dormer with a wooden mullion and transom. Other windows throughout the building are two- to eight-light casements with wooden mullions, all fitted with leaded lights. The gable parapets are made of ashlar, and there are large brick and stone stacks at the ridge and ends of the building. The projection to the left of the entrance and the corresponding change in roof level may suggest that the building has two distinct construction periods. The rear of the building has 19th-century brick extensions.

Inside, the room to the left of the entrance features an open fireplace with a bressumer and moulded, chamfered ceiling beams. The room to the right of the entrance is an open hall, primarily restored in the 19th century, which includes a minstrels gallery with an 18th-century turned balustrade, likely reset from another location.
