Description
Cemetery Lodge and attached railings and gates were built between 1870 and 1871 by T J Hill for the Enfield Burial Board, with J and J Field as the builder. The lodge is constructed from coursed rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features a contrasting slate roof with a tile ridge. It is a 13-storey, 3-bay structure with a rear outshut. On each side of the lodge, there are pedestrian gates, a carriage gate, and a short section of quadrant railing. Designed in the Gothic style, the building includes quoins, moulded plinths, moulded kneelers, roll-moulded coping, and finials on the gables.
The lodge has a central gabled porch with offset side buttresses, a pointed archway with a head-stopped hoodmould, a diagonally-boarded door, and a fanlight featuring Y-tracery. The flanking 4-light bay windows have cusped stone tracery, cornices, and stone roofs. On the first floor, there is a 1-light window flanked by 2-light windows that break the eaves under gablets topped with cross finials, all featuring cusped lights. The rear of the lodge has stepped raised verges leading to the outshut, with corniced lateral stacks with offsets flanking a central gableted window. The returns feature a 2-light window on each floor and a pointed-arched recess in the gable.
The railings and gates are set on low, chamfered walls that terminate at piers. The carriage gate-piers have 2-stage buttresses with ball-flower decorated cornices and decorative gablets. The bars of the gates and railings have decorative finials, and the gates incorporate cusped arches along with decorative base and top rails.
