Description
The Church of Saint Michael and All Angels is a church built in 1874 by architects Carpenter and Ingelow. It is constructed of squared coursed rubblestone and features a pitched tiled roof. The church has an aisled nave, an aisled chancel, a polygonal apse, and a dwarf transept to the north. A mid-20th century narthex and west wall include an entrance to the north-west. The nave is adorned with paired lancets and a clerestory that has traceried oculi set in semi-circular headed richly moulded recesses. The chancel and apse contain painted two-light windows with geometrical tracery, and there are tall buttresses supporting the chancel.
Inside, the church features a fine interior that is partly red brick and partly rendered with ashlar dressings. The three-bay nave has a painted arcade with round stone piers and a fine timber roof constructed with King post and arched braces, complete with wind braces. The two-bay chancel has similar arcades but includes attached shafting that carries transverse ribs for the wooden chancel roof. The polygonal apse has a brick and stone vault, and there are stone shafting details on the walls. The church contains Victorian fittings and furnishings, including a pulpit, font, reredos, and stained glass.
