Description
Number 25 on High Street in Wendover is a house that was once part of a single range with Number 27. It dates back to the 16th century and has been altered over time. The building features a timber frame with brick infill, and some refacing at the ground floor. The left-hand bay has close studding and plaster infill, which is situated below a projecting first floor. The roof is covered with old tiles and there is a tall brick chimney.
On the left side, there is a restored timber-framed gable over a carriageway, which includes a modern two-light leaded casement window. Built into the flank wall within an arch is a roughly shaped stone pedestal, believed to be a stoup from a church. The house is two stories high with three bays, featuring three-light mullioned and transomed leaded windows in the center and the right-hand side of the first floor, as well as in the right bay of the ground floor. There is a six-panel door to the left of the center, along with a small canted bay window on the left that has leaded glazing.
Inside, the ground floor front rooms have been combined into one and contain large fireplaces. At the right end, there are two posts that show remnants of painting. A dog-leg stair from the 18th or early 19th century is located at the rear, featuring a columnar lintel and wall-painting on the adjacent wall and posts, which depict colored stylized foliage and a repeating geometric design. The roof structure includes principal and common rafters.
