Description
The War Memorial in Wendover was built in 1922 and designed by Gerard Cogswell. It is made from Chilmark stone and features an octagonal base of red brick with stone quoins. The memorial has a triple-stepped superstructure that supports a square pedestal with projecting corners, resembling a chest tomb. Above this is a tall, tapering octagonal shaft that culminates in an open shrine, adorned with crocketed finials at the corners and a cruciform finial on top.
The memorial was proposed by Major Edwin Smith, the Lord of the Manor, who provided the site on the Manor Waste. Cogswell's design was inspired by medieval wayside crosses, as discussed in Aymer Vallance's book 'Old Crosses and Lychgates' published in 1920. The carving was done by Gething & Co of Salisbury at a cost of £278, and it was unveiled by the Marchioness of Lincolnshire, whose son had died at the Battle of 2nd Ypres. The memorial is listed for its historical significance as well as its visual appeal.
