Description

Turville Grange is a house dating from the mid- to late 18th century, significantly refurbished and altered around 1890 for Stephen Smith, with later 20th-century extensions. The front facade is constructed of vitreous header brick with red brick dressings, a flint plinth, and a dentilled cornice. The rest of the building is brick, with old tile roofs and brick chimneys topped with dentil caps. Originally a double-pile house, it includes a parallel rear wing added around 1890. The house is two storeys and has an attic, with five bays in total. It has 3-pane sash windows with gauged heads. Three dormers, dating from around 1890, feature leaded casements and moulded pediments. The central entrance has a 6-panelled door with a rectangular fanlight, panelled reveals, a bolection surround, and a heavy segmental pediment supported by cut scroll brackets, all likely dating from around 1890. Single-storey bays on either side, added around 1890, are canted and have moulded cornices and parapets; the one on the right was formerly a Tuscan loggia with stone columns and cornice. The sides are triple gabled, with the left side exhibiting symmetrical canted bays and a colonnade between them. 20th-century wings have been added to the rear. The interior has been remodelled, with repositioned 18th and early 19th century fireplaces and an 18th-century turned baluster staircase.
