Description
Tamworth House is a house dating from the early 18th century, possibly designed by Francis Smith of Warwick, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It is constructed of gritstone ashlar, and features a roof that is hidden behind coped parapets with acroteria at the corners. The building has a chamfered stone plinth and is arranged in three plus three bays.
The façade includes a moulded cornice, a blocking course, and rusticated angle pilasters. The left three bays are set back and feature a doorway with a moulded stone surround, a 19th-century panelled door, and a window with a moulded architrave, all enclosed within a 20th-century porch. To the left are two single bar sash windows in moulded architraves, with three similar windows above. The right three bays have three glazing bar sash windows in moulded architraves on the ground floor, with three similar windows above and three smaller windows above again.
Inside, there is an open string staircase around a square well that extends through three storeys. The staircase features carved tread ends and two widely spaced turned balusters per tread, alternating with turned and barley sugar balusters, and has a wreathed and slightly ramped handrail. The upper rooms contain 19th-century marble chimneypieces.
