Description
Hill Farmhouse is a house from the early 18th century, possibly designed by Francis Smith. It is constructed of chequer brick with stone dressings and features a hipped tiled roof with a concealed valley and a central brick chimney that has an offset and moulded head. The building has a moulded box cornice with a stone bedmould. It is two storeys high with an attic, a stone plinth, and a first-floor band.
The south front has five bays with narrow window openings that have flat gauged brick arches and carved beyblocks. The modern sashes are three panes wide. The central bay is made of stone and contains a six-panelled door surrounded by an architrave with a keyblock, a small cornice, and an open scroll pediment. Above the door, there is a window in a carved stone surround featuring dolphins at the head and side scrolls that rest on the capping mould of a plain stone apron. This stone carving was done by William Oldfield, who also created the carving on the chancel of Chicheley Church.
The flank elevations have three bays each, with some windows blocked. The north elevation is irregular and includes a large central arched staircase window. Inside, the house retains its original staircase that rises the full height of the building, featuring turned balusters and a moulded handrail. There are also some original panelled doors, but otherwise, the interior has been altered. It is noted that one part of the house may have served as a Dower House to Chicheley Hall.
