Description
Nos 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 on Broadway in Amersham are a group of buildings dating from the 15th century and later, originally timber framed but refronted in brick in the 18th century. Number 1 features red stretchers and grey headers, while Nos 7 and 9 are constructed of red brick. The buildings have an old tiled roof and a large chimney located opposite the door to Nos 7 and 9. A moulded wood cornice runs along the top, and the buildings are two storeys high with a first-floor band.
The first floor has modern leaded casements, with two 2-light windows at No 1 and two 3-light windows at Nos 7 and 9. No 1 has a plain door and a barred casement to the right, both set within brick arches, along with a modern shop bow window on the left. Nos 7 and 9 feature double doors with three panels each, the upper two being glazed, with panelled reveals and an architrave surround. They also have a hood with a panelled soffit and cornice, along with modern shop bow windows on either side.
The west gable of No 1 displays exposed timber framing, while Nos 3 and 5 are located in a rear wing, featuring timber framing with one curved brace, a brick ground floor, and plastered panels above. They have modern leaded casements and doors, including one at the first-floor level with an external staircase. The east side also shows exposed timber framing with two visible curved braces. Inside Nos 7 and 9, there are remains of a medieval arch braced truss.
