Description
Bowberhead Farmhouse and the adjoining byres are a farmhouse complex that likely dates from the late 17th century. An added porch and west end were constructed in 1717, featuring the initials R.H. (Robert Hunter) on a panel above the door. The byres at the east end are probably also from the 17th century. The building is made of wet-dashed rubble with quoins and has graduated slate roofs on the house and graduated stone flags on the byre.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and consists of six bays. It has rusticated quoins at the east end and a full-height gabled porch with a panelled door in a chamfered surround. To the left of the porch is a sash window, while to the right are an original fire window and four additional sash windows. On the first floor, there is a sash window to the left, a casement window in a chamfered surround with a blocked owl-hole above, and four sash windows to the right. The west end and porch feature stone copings and kneelers, and there are rendered chimneys at both ends of the original house and the rear wing.
The three-bay byre has a casement window on the front elevation and two doors at the rear. Inside the house, there is some original woodwork, with some pieces re-used from other buildings.
