Description

NY 65 NE HARTLEYBURN

6/129 Byers Hall Farmhouse and adjacent outbuildings to east II

House, early C19 incorporating older fabric. Coursed rubble with tooled and margined quoins and dressings; slate roof. 2 storeys, 3 bays, symmetrical. 2 steps up to central 6-panel door with alternating jambs; 16-pane sash windows in tooled stone surrounds. Coped gables with stepped and corniced stacks. Lower outbuildings to right. Left return shows blocked windows to attic. Rear elevation has gabled wing with corniced stone stack set forward from outshut. Right return of wing has doorway with re-set lintel inscribed R H M 1663 Left return of wing has 1st floor 12-pane sliding sash. Outbuilding to left has cart entrance with pigeon holes above. Interior; some unusually thick walls indicate the survival of earlier fabric, perhaps C17.
