Description
Byers Hall Farmhouse, dating from the early 19th century, incorporates older materials. It is built of coursed rubble with tooled and margined quoins and dressings, topped with a slate roof. The house is two storeys high with three symmetrical bays. There are two steps leading up to a central six-panel door with alternating jambs, and 16-pane sash windows set in tooled stone surrounds. The gables are coped, featuring stepped and corniced stacks. To the right, there are lower outbuildings. The left side shows blocked windows in the attic. The rear has a gabled wing with a corniced stone stack that is set forward from the outshut. The right side of the wing has a doorway with a re-set lintel inscribed with "R H M 1663," while the left side features a first-floor 12-pane sliding sash window. The outbuilding on the left has a cart entrance with pigeon holes above. Inside, some unusually thick walls suggest the survival of earlier fabric, possibly from the 17th century. The farm buildings to the left are not of interest.
