Description
Halton Lea Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, which was enlarged and remodelled in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of rubble with dressings, mostly rendered, and features a slate roof. It has two storeys and four irregular bays. The second bay contains a 20th-century glazed door flanked by paired 12-pane sash windows, while to the right is a small 8-pane sash window. On the first floor, there are 16-pane sash windows. The gables have moulded kneelers and overlapping coping stones, and the end and ridge stacks have been rebuilt in brick and stone. The right side of the house features a central flush-panelled door within a chamfered surround. The rear elevation and the 19th-century rear wing mainly have 12-pane sash windows, with some openings having rock-faced and margined surrounds. Inside, the eastern part of the house has walls over 1 metre thick, suggesting it may have originally served as a large bastle.
