Description

This is a mile post located approximately 40 metres south of West Witton School, dating from the late 19th century. It is made of cast iron and stands about 600 millimetres high, with a triangular shape. The left face features a hand pointing right and the inscription "LEYBURN 4 MILES," while the right face has a hand pointing left and the inscription "HAWES 13 MILES." At the top, there is a triangular face that reads "LEYBURN H.D." This mile post was installed after the reorganisation of highways authorities under the County Councils Act of 1888.
