Description
This is part of an early 18th-century house, originally of an E-plan design. One spine section and one cross-wing remain, with the other cross-wing now forming the Fox and Hounds Inn. The house is built of rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring an artificial slate roof on the spine (Catheral Hall) and a stone slate roof on the cross-wing (Catheral House). It has two-and-a-half storeys and an L-shaped plan, with a window arrangement of 1:1:2.
Catheral Hall, the spine section, has an irregular plan and an outshut at the front containing the entrance. This entrance is marked by a part-glazed door within an eared architrave; the architrave is splayed at the base with roses carved into the ears. To the right of the door is a single-light chamfered window. A string course runs along the facade. Further to the right, and on the first floor, there are two double-chamfered mullion windows, each with two lights. An external stack is located on the left end.
Catheral House, the remaining cross-wing, has a boulder plinth and chamfered quoins. On the ground floor, a three-light sash window sits within an architrave, which is eared at the bottom and has a relieving arch above a moulded band. The first floor features two two-light sashes in architraves, topped by a moulded band. A two-light sash window is set within a coped gable, which has shaped kneelers. The right return is partially rendered, with an external stack. The ground floor of this return has two single-light windows in architraves, separated by a moulded band. An intermediate level has a two-light window in an architrave, while the first floor contains two blind oculi windows within keyed architraves. The building has group value.
