Description
Far End Cottage is a small farmhouse with an attached barn, likely built in the late 17th century or early 18th century, and was unoccupied at the time of inspection in August 1994. The building is constructed from white-washed rubble with quoins and features a stone slate roof. It has a single-depth, two-unit plan oriented east-west and faces south, with the barn extending at the west end.
The exterior consists of two low storeys and two windows. The ground floor includes a wide gabled porch with a square-headed doorway and a drip-band. To the left of the porch is a three-light casement window, an altered one-light opening in the left corner that is now lacking glazing, and a narrow four-pane fixed window to the right. On the upper floor, there is a small square two-light sliding sash window with glazing bars to the left and a two-light casement window on a slightly lower level to the right. The building features a square chimney on the ridge at the left junction and a gable chimney to the right. The barn to the left has a doorway in the center that has been altered to a window (also lacking glazing), with a square loading window above to the right, and an altered or inserted wagon doorway in the west gable. At the rear, the house displays through-stones, two very small one-light windows, and a small lean-to at the west end.
While the interior was not inspected, it is likely to contain features of historical interest. The cottage forms a group with Gawthrop Hall to the west and Barras House to the south.
